The South Carolina Circuit Court Judge has been assigned to oversee Alex Murdaugh’s upcoming murder retrial in the deaths of his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and son, Paul Murdaugh in 2021. What should we know about the woman now tasked with presiding over the next chapter of the Murdaugh saga?
In this episode of Criminally Obsessed, Anne Emerson digs into Judge McCaslin’s path to the bench, a journey that started later in life and led her to the highest levels of South Carolina's judicial system. Joined by former South Carolina Attorney General Charlie Condon, we explore McCaslin’s legal background, her connections to key players in the Murdaugh case including Murdaugh’s Defense Attorney Dick Harpootlian, and how her courtroom style may differ from the judge everyone remembers from the first trial, Clifton Newman.
This time, the stakes are even higher. Prosecutors have indicated the death penalty remains a possibility if Alex Murdaugh is retried for the murders at Moselle, making Judge McCaslin’s decisions critical from day one.
Where will the retrial be held? When could it begin?
When we know, you'll know.

He'll be tried again, but be careful what you wish for: Alex Murdaugh could be facing new evidence to ensure another guilty finding. In this episode we look carefully at the two "mysterious deaths" related to the Murdaugh family, including the alleged "slip and fall" death of his housekeeper Gloria Satterfield (for which Alex and his law firm received more than $4M) and the blunt-force trauma death of Stephen Smith, the 19-year-old gay classmate of Alex's son, Buster. Will Alex be charged in the deaths of Gloria and Stephen as investigators take more time to look at the Murdaugh connection?🔔 Subscribe for More True Crime This episode is made possible by @askventuralawyoutube | The Accident Law Firm__________________________________Listen on your audio platforms :Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6mljKhf..Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/da2...Patreon : https://patreon.com/CriminalAppeal?ut...Follow along on social :Instagram: / criminalappealpodcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?...Tik Tok: / criminalappealpodcast Website : www.criminalappealpodcast.comFind your hosts:Dr. Casey Jordan : / drcaseyjordan Dr. Colleen Butler-Sweet : / colleenbutlersweet_phd #alexmurdaugh #alexmurdaughtrial #TrueCrime #CriminalAppeal #crimepodcast Criminal Appeal is sponsored by Ventura Law, The Accident Law Firm. They were shot to death June 7, 2021 at the family’s Moselle property in Colleton County, South Carolina. Alan Wilson won’t be back to personally prosecute what some might call part two of South Carolina’s trial of the century.
In this episode of Criminally Obsessed, investigative reporter Anne Emerson sits down with Wilson for an unfiltered conversation about the Alex Murdaugh murder case, the shocking decision by the South Carolina Supreme Court to overturn the original convictions, and whether prosecutors believe they can secure another guilty verdict in one of the biggest true crime cases in America. We ask Wilson our burning questions about disgraced Clerk of Court Becky Hill, Alex’s alleged co-conspirator and cousin Curtis “Eddie” Smith, and the still unsolved Stephen Smith investigation, and hear about his real-time reactions to seeing key evidence in the case for the first time, like the infamous kennel video.

Anne spoke with Curtis “Eddie” Smith, the man prosecutors say helped Alex stage a roadside shooting in Hampton County, South Carolina back in 2021. This is an exclusive interview Anne did in 'secret' that we unearthed from our archives that was conducted just weeks after the incident.
Nearly five years later, the alleged co-conspirator in the failed $10 million life insurance plot remains on house arrest, with police claiming he was also pushing drugs, forging checks, and laundering money for Alex.
As the Murdaugh case heads back to court, this interview raises an even bigger question: why is one of the key figures in the saga still sitting in legal limbo? Murdaugh defense attorney Dick Harpootlian says a trial for Eddie is taking way too long.

One year later, Murdaugh was indicted for their murders. He pleaded not guilty. His trial began in January 2023 and was labeled "the trial of the decade" by local news outlets. A jury found him guilty, and he was sentenced to serve life in prison. But last week, the South Carolina State Supreme Court overturned the convictions citing conduct on the part of court clerk Becky Hill that denied Murdaugh a fair trial. Haylee and Carol share what it was like to learn such major news on a case they’ve been covering for years. Andrea shares an extra clip of Craig discussing the overturned verdict with Murdaugh’s defense attorneys. Plus, Haylee and Carol answer your questions from social media.

A day after our sit-down interview with Murdaugh defense attorney Dick Harpootlian, we caught up with the other side of this case.
Creighton Waters helped convict Alex Murdaugh in the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul in 2023. He’s now faced with trying the same case — but does the defense already know his playbook? Or are there new tricks up his sleeve?
Waters reacts to the South Carolina Supreme Court ruling that former Clerk of Court Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors during the 2023 trial, and expresses frustration with how the actions of one court official destroyed the integrity of the verdict.
If you know Criminally Obsessed, you know Anne has reported extensively on the Murdaugh saga - she reported from the courtroom on all six weeks of the original trial! He alleging she violated his civil rights by tampering with the jury during his 2023 double-murder trial. Hill previously pleaded guilty to state charges of perjury, obstruction of justice, and misconduct in office. Comments Hill made to jurors was considered as improperly influencing the verdict.
The complaint claims Hill wanted a guilty verdict to help sell her upcoming book about the trial. Murdaugh's team is seeking more than $600,000 in compensatory damages—mostly tied to the costs of the original trial—along with punitive damages. His attorneys have stated that any recovered money will not go to Murdaugh personally, but is intended to hold Hill accountable.

We learned last week that Alex is getting a new trial after the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned his murder convictions from 2021. The fallout from the case keeps getting messier — we learned today that Alex is suing Becky Hill for $600,000, accusing her of jury tampering and violating his constitutional right to a fair trial.
While many people still believe the jury got it right at the first trial regardless of Hill’s actions, the defense insists Alex did not kill his wife and son. We want to know… what makes Harpootlian and his team so sure?

A new trial has been ordered for the disgraced attorney privously convicted for the murders of his wife and son. The ruling was based on jury tampering accusations against court clerk Becky Hill, of improperly influencing jurors, depriving Murdaugh of a fair trial. The court also noted that the original trial judge erred by allowing extensive testimony on Murdaugh's financial crimes.
The two consecutive life sentences against Murdaugh have been vacated. Prosecutors now intend to retry the murder case by January 2027. Murdaugh will remain in prison, as he is still serving roughly 67 years for numerous financial crimes and fraud, to which he plead guilty.
