On 24 September 1905, Lionel Terry shot and killed elderly Chinese immigrant Joe Kum Yung on Haining Street in Wellington. Terry was motivated by virulent anti-Chinese racism and had been campaigning against Asian immigration. He deliberately killed Kum Yung to draw public attention to his cause. Terry was found guilty of murder but declared legally insane and committed to a mental institution, where he spent the rest of his life.
