In this episode, Vanessa Richardson traces Manson’s path from a troubled childhood to the creation of his devoted “Family,” revealing how he manipulated vulnerable followers with drugs, apocalyptic prophecy, and promises of revolution. As the Tate-LaBianca murders terrorized Los Angeles, investigators uncovered a chilling web of control, delusion, and orchestrated violence that made Manson one of history’s most notorious cult leaders.

From failed musician to prophet of “Helter Skelter,” Manson’s descent into madness culminated in one of the most chilling murder sprees in American history. Then, meet Robert Stroud, the “Birdman of Alcatraz.” Though immortalized as a gentle animal lover, the real Stroud was a violent killer who spent more than 40 years in solitary confinement.

The return address belonged to future forensic psychologist Jeffrey Smalldon, then a young undergraduate.
A decade later, after the shocking murders of two co-workers, Smalldon’s quest to understand the twisted minds and motivations of killers became personal in a way it never had been before.
THAT BEAST WAS NOT ME documents five decades of conversations with murderers like John Wayne Gacy, Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, serial sniper Thomas Lee Dillon, and Donald Harvey—then thought to be the most prolific serial killer in American history. Through letters, prison visits, and interviews, Smalldon gives readers a terrifying look into the darkest recesses of the human psyche.
