Welcome to Ontario Cold Cases - Canada’s True Crime Podcast where we dig deep into the stories of some of the most elusive and dangerous criminals in modern history. I’m Jay Nicoll of Nicoll Investigations, and in today’s episode, we’re looking into one of Los Angeles' most notorious serial killers—Lonnie Franklin Jr., also known as "The Grim Sleeper."
The name "Grim Sleeper" strikes fear for a reason. It belongs to a man who terrorized South Los Angeles over more than two decades, evading capture in what became one of the most disturbing crime sprees the city had ever seen.
So, who was Lonnie Franklin Jr.? How did he manage to slip through the cracks for so many years? And, perhaps most hauntingly, why was he given the nickname "The Grim Sleeper"? Stick with us as we unravel the twisted tale of a man who hid in plain sight.

Today I’m talking about a creep who went undiscovered for so long and got away with murdering at least 16 people. His nicknames include “The Grim Sleeper,” “Strawberry Murders,” and “The Southside Slayer.” This case never got the attention it deserved, and was ignored for a long time. How they finally caught him is crazy, too. Let me know what you guys think.
Also, let me know who you want me to talk about next time. Hope you have a great rest of your week, make good choices and I'll be seeing you very soon

The man responsible was Lonnie David Franklin Jr. However, his identity wouldn't be revealed for more than 20 years, by which time he had become one of America's most prolific serial killers. At the time, Los Angeles was a city struggling under the weight of racial inequalities and a crack epidemic that was sweeping through its most deprived areas. The victims were black women, and often addicts and sex workers. Many in the communities of South Central felt that these factors all caused a lack of interest on the part of the LAPD in investigating the murders, allowing Franklin to carry on his killing spree undetected. Two years later, in her cover article for L.A. Weekly, Pelisek dubbed him "The Grim Sleeper" for his long break between murders. The killer preyed on a community devastated by crime and drugs and left behind a trail of bodies?all women of color, all murdered in a similar fashion, and all discarded in the alleys of Los Angeles.
The case of the Grim Sleeper is unforgettably singular. But it also tells a wider story about homicide investigations in areas beset by poverty, gang violence, and despair; about how a serial killer could continue his grisly work for two decades in part due to society's lack of concern for his chosen victims; and about the power and tenacity of those women's families and the detectives who refused to let the case go cold.
No one knows this story better than Pelisek, the reporter who followed it for more than ten years. Based on extensive interviews, reportage, and information never released to the public, The Grim Sleeper captures the long, bumpy road to justice in one of the most startling true crime stories of our generation.
