If only it were that simple.

Three years later, South Australian Police still won't confirm the identification. Webb's entire family somehow failed to recognize their missing brother when his face was plastered across Australian newspapers. His wife was living 89 miles from where he died, with no idea he was dead. And for eighteen months before his death, Carl Webb simply vanished from existence with no employment, no address, no trace.

Here's the really unsettling part: knowing WHO he was has made everything else MORE mysterious. Why did he remove every identifying label from his clothing but leave items marked with his brother-in-law's name in his suitcase? How did an unlisted phone number end up in a book of Persian poetry found near his body? And if this was suicide, why stage it like an intelligence operation?

As the first light of day crept across the horizon, it illuminated a sight that would confound loc… In the cool pre-dawn hours of December 1st, 1948, the quiet, serene expanse of Somerton Beach in Adelaide, South Australia, became the stage for one of the most beguiling mysteries of the 20th century. As the first light of day crept across the horizon, it illuminated a sight that would confound local law enforcement and engage armchair detectives around the world for decades to come: the lifeless body of an unidentified man, impeccably dressed, propped against a seawall, the sand beneath him undisturbed, and a half-smoked cigarette resting on his shirt collar. There was no sign of struggle, no immediate clues as to the cause of death, and most perplexing of all, no hint of the man's identity. It was as if he had materialized from thin air. 

In the pocket of the man's trousers, detectives discovered a tiny rolled-up piece of paper reading "Tamam Shud" - Persian for "Ended" or "Finished." This cryptic message, taken from an obscure collection of Persian poetry, "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam," seemed an eerily fitting testament to the enigma that would unfold. In the days, weeks, and years that followed, the case would deepen into an impenetrable mystery, involving a secret compartment, an undeciphered code, and conjectures that reach as far as international espionage.

This is the story of the Somerton Man, a tale entwined in uncertainty and shrouded in enigma, a man who in death became a symbol for the unfathomable mysteries that lie hidden beneath the surface of everyday life. Tucked inside the watch pocket in his pants was a slip of paper with Persian words printed on it which meant “finished.” Over the years, dozens of people tried to identify the man with no success, but Professor Derek Abbott, who enlisted California forensic genealogist Colleen Fitzpatrick, made it his mission in life to solve the case. When the body of a man was found slumped on Adelaide's Somerton Beach in 1948, with no clear identity and no clear cause of death, it set off an investigation that spawned curiosity, concern, and conspiracy theories.

But after decades of following leads, The University of Adelaide’s professor Derek Abbott and US forensic genealogist Colleen Fitzpatrick finally have a name. 

Colleen joins Gemma today to discuss their findings.

The Somerton Man case is one that has confounded Australia for almost 75 years now. It all started when an unidentifiable man was found dead on Somerton Beach. The man had no wallet, no form of ID, there was no name written inside of his clothing as would have been typical for the time. And it seeme… The Somerton Man case is one that has confounded Australia for almost 75 years now. It all started when an unidentifiable man was found dead on Somerton Beach. The man had no wallet, no form of ID, there was no name written inside of his clothing as would have been typical for the time. And it seemed like all of this was on purpose. Things in the case only got stranger when a tiny rolled up piece of paper was found in a hidden fob pocket in the man's jacket. The words on the paper read “Tamam Shud” and were later determined to have been ripped out of a book of poetry written in the 11th century: The Rubaiyat. In part one we’ll dip our toes into the mystery and in part two Ash will be taking everyone to the deep end of the pool for a serious dive into who the heck this man could possibly be and what the heck happened to him.
