Sterns complains his bed mat is flat with very little cushion left, his cell is small and filthy, and he claims there are spots on the wall that appear to be bloody fingerprints. Now, he will be dealing with this situation for the rest of his life. Stephan Sterns, sentenced to multiple life sentences.
After Sterns' arrest, it is emails from Sterns' mother that contain shocking information, as she is encouraging him to tell the truth. Sterns' mother believes other people are involved in the murder of Maddie, and she tells her son to stop protecting these people.
Knowing the emails are not private and protected, Stern's mother alludes to a woman being involved in the case, saying she is "disgusted that she is free and you are not when this is not all your fault."
Some of the emails between Stephan Sterns and his mother seem a bit heavy-handed, trying to make it seem as though Sterns is a "stand-up guy" who wouldn't be a "rat," possibly to try and help her son as he prepares to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Stern's mother says, "I keep thinking about how you would not ever rat out a friend," and later adds, "It really made me mad, and I felt like you valued them over us when you let them get away with stuff. Don't be doing that again."
Stern's mother says things like, "We all know [redacted] was heavily involved in this, and I am disgusted that she is free, and you are not when this is not all your fault!!"
"You need to think about yourself more and her less. She sure isn't thinking of you and how she can help you right now. That whole family is willing to stay quiet and let you take the fall for everything."

Hundreds of evidence photos offer a detailed view of the Kissimmee condo where Madeline lived with her mother and several roommates. The townhome, located in the gated Venetian Bay Villages community, belongs to Jennifer Soto’s father. Soto and Madeline occupied the first floor, while two roommates lived in upstairs bedrooms. At one point, Stephan Sterns rented the third upstairs bedroom, which was otherwise unoccupied.
As the investigation continues, a newly released interview shows that law enforcement has provided Jennifer Soto with “derivative immunity,” a legal protection ensuring her statements cannot be used against her in future prosecution.
Soto gave the interview under an investigative subpoena and provided new details about her on-and-off relationship with Stephan Sterns and the hours leading up to her realization that Madeline was missing

Case Background:
Madeline Soto was a 13-year-old girl living in Kissimmee, Florida. She was initially reported missing on February 26, 2024, after her mom, Jennifer Soto, went to pick her up from school and Madeline was nowhere to be found.
At the time, Jennifer Soto told police that Madeline was dropped off across the street from her school in a church parking lot by her mom's long-time/live-in boyfriend, Stephan Sterns. Stephan Sterns said he watched Madeline walk from the church parking lot towards the school but didn't watch Madeline walk all the way to see that she made it in.
A massive 4-day search effort by multiple law enforcement agencies to find Madeline quickly ensued.
In the immediate aftermath of her disappearance, investigators turned their attention to Stephan Sterns. Law enforcement found several disturbing pictures and videos on his phone of Madeline. He was later arrested on 60 charges, including capital sexual battery, lewd or lascivious molestation, and unlawful possession of materials depicting sexual performance by a child.
Tragically, on March 1, 2024, Madeline was found deceased near a wooded area on Hickory Tree Rd. in Osceola County. This is the same area where Stephan Sterns's car was reported as being seen on the day Madeline went missing.
Through several press conferences and news statements, law enforcement has stated that they believe that Madeline was already dead the morning she disappeared and that Stephan Sterns was actually moving her body at the time he was supposed to take her to school.
Police also revealed that security footage shows Stephan Sterns dumping Madeline's backpack and her school laptop in an apartment complex dumpster at 7:35 am that morning. Additionally, police have video footage of Stephan Sterns returning to the dumpster, with what appears to be Madeline visibly deceased in the car.
In April of 2024, Stephan Sterns was indicted on first-degree murder by a grand jury. On June 10, 2024, prosecutors announced that they will be seeking the death penalty against Stephan Sterns for Madeline's murder.

During Madeline Soto’s autopsy, the medical examiner, Dr. Stephan Giles, raised concerns about her hyoid bone. Dr. Giles noted that the right portion of the bone was not intact, suggesting possible strangulation. The autopsy confirmed that Madeline Soto died from strangulation, and her death was ruled a homicide.
Investigators discovered shocking internet searches on a computer used by Stephan Sterns, including a search for Sevoflurane, a volatile anesthetic used for hypnosis, amnesia, analgesia, akinesia, and autonomic blockade during surgical procedures.
Another released detail revealed that the socks Maddie was wearing were clean, indicating her feet never touched the ground while wearing them. This is significant, as Maddie’s body was found in a wooded area behind a locked fence. Police believe her body was either dropped over the barbed wire fence or carried through the gate before being moved to the location where she was found.

In a later interview, Jennifer Soto instead says she heard someone in the kitchen. She assumes it's Madeline, but that isn't the only change in the mother's story. Jennifer finally tells investigators she last saw her 13-year-old daughter the night before, when she sent Madeline to another bedroom with Stephan Sterns.
According to Mom, this is a common arrangement when she needs to get a good night's sleep.
Early in the investigation, Stephan Sterns was a person of interest. The day Madeline Soto is reported missing, investigators allegedly found 1,700 sexually explicit images on Sterns's cell phone. Investigators have also said they found images and video on Sterns’ phone showing he molested her for years.
Initially, Stephan Sterns tells investigators he drops the girl off near Hunter's Creek Middle School. However, around that same time, investigators say a license plate reader detected Sterns's car miles away from the school. Using data from license plate readers and surveillance video, investigators track Sterns's car as it travels east from Kissimmee toward St. Cloud and Old Hickory Tree Road, where Madeline Soto's body is found lying face down near bamboo trees covered in debris.
Investigators obtain surveillance video from the morning Madeline Soto is reported missing a trash compactor where a tread from Stephan Sterns's car is found as well as items belonging to Madeline Soto, like her black backpack. Sterns is caught on video throwing these objects in the trash compactor. Minutes later, Sterns is caught on surveillance video at 7:36 a.m. driving away from the Kissimmee, Florida neighborhood with a female in the front passenger seat.
Investigators believe the female seen at 7:36 a.m. in the surveillance video in the front passenger seat of Stephan Sterns's vehicle is Madeline Soto's dead body propped up and buckled into the seat to appear as a living person, but closer inspection of the video shows her head leaning toward her shoulder with her mouth open. Sterns is caught on surveillance video again at 8:19 am when he is seen entering the front security gate of the neighborhood with a female, in the same position as the surveillance video.
Stephan Sterns's car is seen on surveillance footage again, this time turning into the parking garage of Holiday Inn Club Vacations in Orlando. He drives to the top level of the parking garage and gets out of his car around 9:42 a.m. A man matching Sterns's description is seen allegedly opening the trunk, walking around to the passenger seat, opening the door, and carrying what appears to be a "limp female body" to the trunk of the vehicle. At 9:44 a.m. the vehicle is seen on surveillance video leaving the parking garage and driving away.
The Florida State Attorney's office release more than 900 pages of information showing how investigators, using surveillance videos and license plate readers tracked Stephan Sterns leaving an apartment complex in Kissimmee on the morning of February 26, and driving to an area of St. Cloud where Madeline Soto's body is found four days later. It remains unclear as to how Madeline Soto died.
The Orange-Osceola State Attorney’s Office announced that it filed 60 counts against Sterns, including:
• Eight counts of Sexual Battery on a Child Under 12
• Five counts of Sexual Battery with a Child, 12-18
• Seven counts of Lewd or Lascivious Molestation
• 40 counts of Unlawful Possession of Materials Depicting Sexual Performance by a Child, 10 or More Stephan Sterns will face the death penalty if convicted of the murder of Madeline Soto.
