Had the crime scene been cleaned and sanitized before the police arrived? Was furniture staged to throw off detectives? In one of the most extraordinary true crime stories ever published, Broken Plea questions what really happened in the house on King Road—and the results of that investigation will astound you.
In the early morning hours of November 13, 2022, four lives were lost in a brutal crime in Moscow, Idaho—and a nation demanded answers. When a suspect accepted a plea bargain, the story seemed settled. Justice, many believed, had been served.
Broken Plea challenges that assumption.Drawing on court records, investigative timelines, witness statements, and apparently overlooked inconsistencies, this meticulously researched exposé examines how a rush to judgment may have shaped one of the most closely watched murder cases in recent memory.
As the official narrative hardened, critical leads went unexplored, contradictory evidence was minimized, and alternative explanations faded from view. This book does not claim certainty where none exists. Instead, it asks the questions that were never fully pursued: What happens when pressure to close a case outweighs the search for truth? What evidence may have been sidelined, and why? And what are the consequences when a plea doesn’t end scrutiny but invites it? Clear-eyed, unsparing, and deeply unsettling, Broken Plea reopens the case—and invites people to look again at what justice demands when the truth remains unresolved. After his arrest, the case moved toward trial, but in 2025, Kohberger accepted a plea deal and received multiple life sentences. But one question the evidence never fully answered still remains: what was the motive?

On November 18, 2022, just five days after the murders, Kohberger is seen on the surveillance footage at a Department of Motor Vehicles building in Pullman. During the visit, a DMV worker told Kohberger that the area appears safer than San Francisco, which is where she is from.
The employee commented, “I like how small, quiet and I would say safe. But the whole Moscow thing, kinda makes it feel a little less,” before Kohberger said, “Yeah,” and nodded his head in agreement.
Notably, Kohberger was later filmed filling out paperwork while wearing black gloves. Kohberger, who requested non-specialty plates, told the DMV worker that he was a Ph.D. student at Washington State University, where he studied criminology.

Kaylee Gonsalves' parents say they were made aware of it just hours before. The redacted photos show the bedrooms where the murders took place, clearly showing blood spatter on the walls, blood dripping on the beds, and blood smears on the floor where a battle of life and death took place.
As it turned out, three of the photos showed body parts and the victims, and had to be taken down by the police.
The families of Kaylee, Madison, Xana, and Ethan have filed a lawsuit against WSU, claiming the killings should not and would not have occurred if Washington State University had acted on multiple complaints about Kohberger's inappropriate, predatory, and menacing behavior, the suit seeks unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial for negligence and the wrongful deaths of their loved ones.
The 126-page complaint alleges WSU is at fault for bringing Kohberger to the Pullman-Moscow area, where they accepted him into their criminal justice program and hired him as a teaching assistant.
Within weeks of Kohberger's arrival, WSU knew there were accusations of Kohberger's threatening, stalking, and predatory behavior led to more than a dozen formal complaints being filed about Kohberger.
The families say WSU failed by not taking action and following up on the complaints about Kohberger, ignoring the warning signs that allowed Kohberger's behavior to escalate unchecked.
The families claim, "On November 13, 2022, a foreseeable - and, in fact, predictable - tragedy occurred when Kohberger entered the bedrooms of four undergraduate students and violently stabbed them to death. These deaths should not and would not have occurred if WSU had acted appropriately."
As the lawsuit heads to court, Kohberger's sister gives an exclusive interview discussing how the family is hurting.

The convicted murderer and "wanna be rapper" cowardly saves his on life from death "penalty" in exchange for a guilty plea and life in prison without parole. This week’s Side Bar dives into the case of the Idaho Murderer, Bryan Kohberger.
ABOUT THE CASE:
Bryan Kohberger, a former criminology PhD student, pleaded guilty in July 2025 to the brutal 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students — Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. Investigators linked him to the crime through DNA evidence found on a knife sheath at the scene and a discarded Q-tip from his parents’ trash. Despite extensive digital forensics (cell tower pings, surveillance footage) and his attempts to clean his car and apartment, the motive for the killings remains unclear. As part of a plea deal, he avoided the death penalty and was sentenced to four consecutive life terms without parole, plus 10 years for burglary.

On the third anniversary of the Moscow Murders, Judge Hippler rules Kohberger has to pay additional restitution to the families of Kaylee and Maddie of about $3,000, the cost of the urns now holding the remains of the best friends. Kohberger argued he didn't have the money to pay the restitution because he is in prison for the rest of his life. The judge tosses that notion stating Kohberger received nearly $30,000 in county jails while awaiting trial, most of it coming from his family.
Hippler also points out Kohberger is a young man who can earn money through prison employment. Kohberger will "receive sufficient amounts over his life to at least come close to meeting his financial restitution obligations. The compensation ruling for the Goncalves and Mogen families is in addition to the nearly $300,000 Kohberger is already ordered to pay the families.
However, in a shocking announcement from the bench, Hippler says Kohberger can legally make money from selling his story, saying the Idaho law "leaves open the potential for Defendant to receive money from media contracts in the future" and such earnings will not be accessible to victims for restitution payments.
