One by one, loved ones delivered searing victim impact statements—describing the lives stolen and the generational trauma left behind. Heuermann, largely expressionless, spoke briefly. In this episode, we focus on the emotional heart of the sentencing—from raw statements to the quiet devastation of children who grew up without their mothers—and what it meant to finally say these words, face-to-face.more

We learned details of what police found on Heuermann's phones. Yes, multiple phones. Rex Heuermann used a series of burner phones to lure sex workers, contacting them hundreds of times over two years, according to court documents. These "untraceable" phones, along with his personal phone, traced to a "tight cluster" of cell towers near his Massapequa Park home, linking him to the victims and taunting calls made to family members.
Police arrested the prominent New York architect in connection with murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, Sandra Costilla, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes. The 8th victim, 34-year-old Karen Vergata, was last heard from on Valentine's Day 1996. Her legs and feet were found the same year on Fire Island. Her skull was found fifteen years later near Tobay Beach in Nassau County.
The women's remains were found along Gilgo Beach in Long Island within 500 feet of each other. The first four victims, dubbed the Gilgo Four, were found wrapped in burlap. Heuermann, originally claimed his innocent. Now he will spend the rest of his life in prison, sentenced to multiple life terms for his crimes

Rodney K. Harrison’s life could have gone the way of the drug dealers he grew up with in South Jamaica, Queens. Instead, a twist of fate and relentless drive led him to become the NYPD’s highest-ranking uniformed officer and, later, Police Commissioner of Suffolk County on Long Island—where he engineered the arrest of the elusive Gilgo Beach serial killer.
Harrison survived a false arrest as a teenager and later dodged bullets as an undercover in Brooklyn. He calmed the fallout of Eric Garner’s chokehold death on Staten Island, worked shoulder-to-shoulder with outspoken community leaders in Harlem, brought Jam Master Jay's killers to justice, removed bricks from the 9/11 Twin Towers, dealt with looters during the pandemic on the streets of New York—and always advocated for every victim.
This real-life Blue Bloods true crime story chronicles the triumphs, controversies, politics, and dangers that define modern policing in America’s largest city.
Harrison shares these true crime stories:
The harrowing night his undercover partner was shot on the street.
An insider’s view of the investigations that shaped headlines—from Jam Master Jay to his career-defining case, putting the Gilgo Beach serial killer (he called him "the Devil that walks among us") behind bars, and the personal sacrifices and moral dilemmas behind the badge.

Now, we’re venturing into the dark psyche of a human being capable of such brutality, to ask the question… Why? In this episode of Criminally Obsessed, we sit down with forensic psychologist Dr. John Delatorre to break down the mindset of a serial killer, from what drives their choices to why their actions can feel compulsive and calculated at the same time.
Heuermann admitted his crimes to his own daughter, Victoria Heuermann, and ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, as captured in the Peacock documentary The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets, where they describe coming face to face with the truth. After watching the doc, we have questions… Like how did a husband and father murder multiple women not only in his home, but the crime scene was his childhood bedroom?
We explore the psychology and facts of a case that is truly stranger - and darker - than fiction.

That’s the reality Asa Ellerup faces after Rex Heuermann, the Gilgo Beach serial killer, admitted to murdering and dismembering multiple women in the home they shared. In this episode of Criminally Obsessed, we take a closer look at Asa’s account revealed in the Peacock documentary The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets. Some of the actions she’s taken after hearing Rex’s confession are… unusual. We wanted to learn more, from an expert with the perfect background to take us into the dark corners of the human psyche.
We’re joined by forensic psychologist Dr. John Delatorre to unpack Asa’s mindset, including how coercion and long-term influence can shape someone’s perception of reality. Asa says she initially did not believe he was guilty, and even now, her actions are raising questions - including her decision to sleep in the ‘kill room’ where the murders took place. She claims it’s a way to spiritually apologize to the victims - what does that say about trauma, control, and psychological manipulation?
As new details emerge in the Long Island Serial Killer case, we explore the psychological toll, the lingering questions, and what this reveals about the people closest to the perpetrator.

She takes us into that room and explains what it was like - Rex Heuermann’s “overly confident” demeanor as he confirms his killings, his body language, and reactions from his own ex-wife and daughter along with victims’ family members. As a reporter who followed this case from the beginning, Kristin reacts to the day’s events with our host Anne Emerson.
We also speak with Dr. David Mittelman of Othram forensic genetic genealogy labs, instrumental in identifying Heuermann’s eighth victim, Karen Vergata. He gives us a glimpse into the years of work it took to give Karen back her name.
